Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is a government-funded public university located in the city previously known as Frunze, now named Bishkek. KSMA was named after I.K. Akhunbaev, a pioneering Kyrgyz surgeon. On 1 September 1939, the university started with an intake of 200 students. KSMA’s foundation was fostered by Moscow’s First Medical Institute, along with medical schools in Leningrad, Almaty and Tashkent. It reflects the ancient roots of the Soviet-era medical education network of Central Asia. Today, the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic regulates the university.
For more than eight decades, KSMA has become one of Kyrgyzstan's key centres for medical education. More than 6,000 residents and interns are currently enrolled, with a cumulative alumni base of 40,000 doctors. Among multiple courses, General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and postgraduate medical education are also taught through a dedicated Faculty of Medicine structure.

Location
Bishkek, Capital city of Kyrgyzstan
The main campus of Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is located on Akhunbaev Street in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Apart from being a university district, Bishkek has several hospitals, markets and day-to-day amenities near the main campus. Its compact layout is designed with the students’ needs, such as accommodation, classes, and clinical sites, in mind. Moreover, Bishkek has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. So, students coming from India should prepare for a wider range of climate change.
Academics
Focused training, English-medium instruction
KSMA's General Medicine programme spans six years. The curriculum is segregated into pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical phases, culminating in a supervised clinical internship. For international students, the programme is delivered through a dedicated English-medium Faculty of General Medicine, with Russian introduced progressively as students move into clinical rotations and begin working directly with patients.

Hostel accommodation
KSMA has six dormitory-style hostels for both domestic and international residents. Students get all modern facilities along with common kitchens, study areas, high-speed internet access, and 24/7 security.
Academic infrastructure
The 6-year general medicine curriculum is segregated into three distinct parts: the pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical rotations. The curriculum focuses equally on academic and practical training.

The university library offers a vast collection of academic resources that support self-directed learning, research, and exam preparation.
Partnerships
International collaboration
During its establishment in 1939, Kyrgyz State Medical Academy got support from Moscow's First Medical Institute and other prestigious medical schools in Leningrad, Almaty and Tashkent. It reflects KSMA’s strong connection with the region's shared medical-education network. Today, KSMA has strong international collaboration with 100 higher education institutions in both the CIS and other countries such as Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Iran, Europe and South Korea. For example, every year, it organises guest lecture sessions and master classes by renowned professors from foreign universities. In 2018, Professor Suresh Naruka took part from India.
